I always thought it was because they were squinting from one generation to the next... only squinters were considered attractive by other squinters, and thus bred, and genes for squinting became the dominant ones.
Oh yes, Kazbag, on my authority you may tell your children that the grass is green because God didn't like the purple variety, and the sky had already demanded blue!

The eyes could have been made like that through evolution and living there for so long so their eyes had to adapt to their surroundings.

So I can not say whether or not it is true.
