Football (soccer) is actually very popular in China. The Chinese watched the FIFA World Cup in great numbers. Chinese television also regularly shows matches from big European leagues like the English Premier League, German Bundesliga, Spanish Primera Liga, Italian Serie A & French Division 1.

China also has it's own domestic football league.

Their league is called the Chinese Super League.
Some of the more prominent soccer teams in China include Dalian ShiDe, Beijing Guo'An.

Yes, football/soccer is popular in China.

According to my National Geographic map from the June 2006 edition:

"China, 2005: Recent data suggest that soccer and basketball are equally popular, followed by traditional Chinese favourite table tennis."

So, yes, basketball is definitely an important sport, and so are football/soccer and, of course, table tennis.

They see it as a celebrity sport, they only take notice when a famous import comes into the country to play.
