why water becomes less dense when it freezes???

It is just one of the properties of the H bonding of water and the type of crystal lattice it forms. Also not all ice is less dense than water. If you froze water with tritium or deuterium instead of regular H the ice would sink.

Also water reaches it maximum density as it approaches its freezing point.

Because when water freezes the molecules are in a spaced arrangement. So ice is less dense than water. That's why the fishies don't die in the winter- because ice freezes from the surface down.

This is because as the temperature of water drops, and water begins to freeze, the geometry of the strong hydrogen bonds produces a hexagonal arrangement of molecules which produces less molecules per volume than water in its liquid form.
