Well, in my opinion there are 4 essentials.

1. Ziggy Stardust: Near perfection.
2. Aladdin Sane: Also great glam era stuff.
3. Hunky Dory: Earlier album and has great tunes.
4. Diamond dogs: Great glam stuff and also has some weird songs.

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars.
A concept album that was right for its time. Also made Bowie a huge star.

I have to say tha this question has defently got to be a hard one because he has been going for a long time it also depends if you are asking. WHAT DECADE AS WELL? I would have to say that one of his best songs has got to be Im afraid of Americans but at the same tme the song he did with queen was a good song at the same time. But my all time favourite has got to be one he did on his London Boy album whch is called the Laughing Knome.
Dont know if you have heard of it but if you havent I would defently go and find that song because it is defently one you have got to listen to before you did because it is so funny it had me crying with laughter.

I liked the stuff he did in the mid-later 70s as his voice started to sound really amazing around then. The vocals on "Young Americans" are probably his best.

Some of his early stuff is very pretentious and it got pretentious again later on, but in the mid-late 70s he seemed to have got it right. I also really like "Under Pressure" (duet with Queen).

If you mean by a single, the it's gotta be Ashes to ashes. That video must be the finest cutting-edge ever. It still gives me goosebumps every time. Magic!

Life On Mars. Optimistic, opaque, weird, musically adventurous, not druggie self-indulgence.
