The computer usually never uses the virtual memory until the RAM is full. The cheap way to do this is increase the virtual memory, but there's a limit to how much it is recommended to increase it. 2 times the RAM you have is a good general rule of thumb, so if u have 256MB of RAM, u would set the virtual memory to 512MB.
To set the virtual memory, go right click on my computer>properties.
go to "advanced" tab>performance settings>"advanced" tab>virtual memory change
... and do ur stuff
The more expensive, though my personal suggestion is just buy some new RAM. If u're running windows XP, by all means at least 512MB of RAM. Minimum requirement is 128MB, but don't trust that.

virtual memory is part of the hard drive the computer uses as if it were real memory
the rule of thumb is virtual memory should be 1.5 times the size of your system memory,so if you have 256mb ram ir would be 384mb virtual memory
with reference to your question the answer is "do nothing",windows will automatically increase the size of your virtual memory and it will return to normal in around 2 to 3 minutes,so in this time dont try to play any games or run any applications,as they may not have enough memory to run them
getting this "virtual memory full" message is normally a sign that you need to upgrade your memory,i always recommend that you double your memory size iif you are below a gigabyte,so if you have 256 go to 512mb,or if you have 512mb go to 1gb
to find out your memory capacity and requirements go to http://www.crucial.com/,and do a system scan using the free scan, this will tell you a)your memory type b)memory speed c)your memory capacity, you can then print this report out and take it with you when you buy your memory so you get the right one
good luck

Cleaning the register is a good way of improving the performances of your pc and eliminate malwares and trojans. A program I trust is CCleaner http://j.mp/UrAEMJ
It's a very good program and easy to use.

Virtual memory is disc space. Also, the swap file may be too small (if you have enough space on the drive).

You've had some good answers; you can also stop all your programs loading on Startup using Winpatrol. Its pointless loading them if you're not using them.
