The reason is because when it comes to containing an uprising (or holding on to terroritory) you need large numbers of troops on the ground. The problem with the US strategey was that they easily defeated the Iraqi army using high-tech means such as smart missiles and jet aircraft strikes, but they failed to put enough people on the ground to hold the country after the victory.

Many people don't like the idea of putting lots of grunts on the ground (naturally we think we should use as few as possible), but this only makes the holding of the country more difficult and dangerous leading to more US deaths.

Now that the Democrats are in, why not wait and see what they will do? Who said they were increasing the level of troups in Iraq? The article said only that there was a call to increase the troups.

Respectfully, if you were over there facing the situation would you want more people on your side to help you fight? Would you rather take your chances with no extra help and die a little sooner than you cared to because you were too stubborn to want the extra support?

Because it is not the decision maker's life that is exposed to the frontline. It is some hapless soldier's. When there is no risk to me, why wouldn't I ask for more soldiers ? Also, I have been stubbornly insisting that invading Iraq was the right thing to do.

There is no point in American soldiers dying in Iraq any longer. Iraqis need to figure out what they want, whether that is civil war or a democracy. It is a war of politics now and America need to let Iraqis defend themselves and shape their own future.

Yeah, it is one hell of a mess. It is too bad we are so pussified that we can not rain death on their strongholds and hideouts and punish all who aid them.
