Abigail Adams. We have her letters to and from her husband, and she was very bright, and very wise. She is the one who reminded her president husband to "remember the ladies," a line every politician should have cross-stitched on his wall right where his eyes light on it every day.

Because of course she was not just speaking of the woman's self-interest; she was speaking of the whole concept of the family and the interests of hearth and home, which the women would find far more significant than the men who could sometimes be overwhelmed by the power and pressure of office-holding, the big business interests and the big government interests.

What is life to the average American? His own home, his own kids, his own wife. That's what the ladies are remembering when they wield their enormous influence, even when they do not have a personal vote. She was not so much talking about votes for women, as votes with women and their interests in mind.

Two come to mind, I can't name just one.
Eleanor Roosevelt and Hillary Clinton. Hillary was the first First Lady to be directly involved in politics and policy since Roosevelt. Theorectically I would have voted for Roosevelt for office, and so far I support Hillary Clinton if she decides to run.
