The most recent trend is to build a 500,000.00 house that is so close to your neighbor's house you can almost reach out from your window and touch their house. Land is very expensive in select markets. Look under home builders to get a feel for what is popular as far as style goes. Like Pulte Homes.

We are building a home right now in Williamsburg Virginia. We used the Architect / home designer plan from this site and architect--

There are many other home designer websites available. Here is a link that will give you a list of sites.

Styles of homes vary in the states. It depends on what region you want to live in . the style of homes is influence directly by which foreign country settled in that area during The U. S 's early American setllemnt era and The actual Colonial Period.. You'll find Spaish influenced dsigns in Florida, Texas and Southern California. New England Colonial style is popular in the Northeastern States. Of course contemporary designs are found throughout the country wherever permitted. In the Midwest you'll find the craftsman and farm style homes We selected a very Southern style home with French colonial influence because of where we are building it and it had to be approved by the community also.. Check new homes web sites in different states to get an idea of the styles that are used. Here are some from around the country--

realtor.com has actual houses for sale and the styles differ all over the country. check out each area.
latest trends:
houses are getting bigger as baby boomers retire and want big home, not small. also some new family homes are designed for extended family ( ma & pa and kids and grandma/pa) They are so the family can stay together in retirement like the Waltons( a tv show) Its called "retire-in-place"
Lot sizes are staying small as few want the extra work or taxes and the developers must cut costs per unit to compete.

oddly, one very new lesser trend is for very very small homes that can be used as vacation getaways, extra cottage in back and so forth. they are mini-homes bult efficient like ships with double duty rooms, murphy beds etc. about 600 sq ft.
a few older people buy to retire in so they can travel most time and have a retreat between trips. they could develop into many more uses. poverty homes etc.
