a gift

The answer would first depend on how close you were to your co-worker. I would say if they are a general aquaintence but not a friend then something cute and inexpensive like a card and a $25 gift certificare to Baby Gap/Wal-mart which should be fine but if it is a co-worker you are closer to being friend with they may expect you to use some more imagination with the gift.

If you have heard dozens of stories at the water cooler about thier child loving Barney, Teletubbies, Blues Clues, Dora, Thomas the Tank Engine or Clifford then some party favors, clothing (keep the receipt) or gift under $40 would be fine with or without the card would be fine.

It could be helpful to bring some items that they are likely to run out of. The best catch all items for use of the entire party are hand sanitizer, neosporin, bandaids, baby wipes and tide sticks (for stains on the kids clothes) to be a Goddess among women.

I'm not trying to be a smart a-s-s or anything, but I would highly suggest bringing a couple of Valium and perhaps a flask of Jack Daniels or something.

The thought of attending a toddler's birthday party pretty much makes my uterus shrivel up.
