From the MS-DOS executable file ".com"., short for command, similar but chosen first over "exe" files. When the internet started in 1985, they chose .COMmercial for the top level domains on the Domain Name System. Verisign currently operates dot com.

Originally, it was signal to a commercial entity on the internet. Now it's the standard, though.
.org was originally intended for Non-Profit Organizations, for example, but is considerably less than .com because .com had the real ring to it.

I remember someone in the Silicon Valley area tell me it was short for "communication," and that was long ago enough that it is possible this is true. In any case, that's what I've always assumed.
