The best is to have a dimmer switch on your room lights, and turn them low, but not off. Otherwise, when you look away from the lighted TV screen, your eyes will still be adjusted to the light of the screen, and the room may seem so dark in contrast that you will miss something significant, like something you might stumble over going to the bathroom, or the guy in the corner with a knife in his hand . . . were you watching a murder mystery on TV?

In the dark I recommend driving with the lights on while watching TV. Don't get too distracted to do that.

I personally like to watch TV in the dark but it would be best to have a soft light on so you don't strain your eyes.

Better for the effect of viewing, or for your health???? It is better for the effect with the lights off. It gives the sense of being there, and participating in the program, or movie. But, light can burn the eye and over time leave scars in your eye. So, focused light such as a Television will eventually injure your vision. Just like if you leave something on your Television, stationary for too long, it burns itself into the screen. This is why Television should be viewed with the lights on,,,, the light will not be focused in a small area.

Better for what? Your eyes or the mood? For your eyes, lights off is a no no, you need light around your eyes when they're focusing on something, otherwise your eyes will strain, and that can cause headaches and blurred vision. For the mood, lights off is a yes yes, cos it really is cosy and sexy...depending on what you're watching obviously! If you wear glasses, then it doesn't really matter, because if the lights are off, your glasses will help your eyes not to strain anyway.

I find it better watching it in the dark especially when fire is on and it is a cold winters night outside and inside all cosy however my husband hates it so we compromise by having one small lamp light on in the corner.
I also think it depends on what you are watching once watched horror film in dark and got scared to get up out of chair in case something went boo!

You should watch TV with some other form of light in the background. This helps to stop eye strain and allows your eyes to perceive contrast better. I have a small 25watt incandescent lamp in the corner of my room, on the same wall as my 42inch LG Plasma screen.
Alternatively buy a Philips Screen with the LED Back-lighting feature already built in to do that exact job.
It also make it easier to see the remote!

It is best to watch television with a small amount of light, at least 25% of what you would noramlly use for reading. We use adjustable floor lamps and dimmers to adjust the lighting. You shouldn't watch movies in complete darkness because it can cause eyestrain.
