An independent study is done by an organization NOT related to the subject of the study.

For example, if I make baseballs and I say that mine are the best according to my own testings, that is not an independent study. It can be seen by my consumers that I am being biased.

Now, if the Baseball Consumers Group tests my baseballs compared to the baseballs of others, that is an independent study. Their view can be seen less than biased. If they say my baseballs are the best in the business, it is seen as an unbiased view and my baseballs are most likely the best.

You pay the university and register for the course. You contact the professor and get the requirements worked out. You do the requirements basically on your own, with contact with the professor, and you get credit for the course. It is a chance to take a course when you can not get to the lectures or to set up a course of study not listed in the catalog, but acceptable to a professor for him to sponser.
