Love YES and in every carnation they have appeared, I would say they have been an important band musically as well as in the history of rock as we know it.
Also the solo stuff was brilliant especially Rick Wakemans JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH.

Cannot believe you actually wrote this! Have you not heard of a little-known band knocking around at that time called Led Zeppelin? Famous for a song called Stairway to heaven, that everyone (myself inc.) have struggled to learn while learning geetar?
Page and Plant were the first to fuse Indian/Oriental rhythms together, use blues with hard rock, and be influenced by reggae and prog-rock. Listen to any compilation and no two songs are similar.More importantly, they've influenced an entire generation and genre. Have Yes done that? Er, don't think so. Respect tho for having the nerve to admit it!

Hi, Weevil; this question made me laugh. Not sure what your era is, whether Yes is part of your history/youth or you have come to appreciate them more recently. Having lived through the Yes heyday of the 70s, I must say I can't agree with your statement. Maybe it's a Y chromosome thing. I recall that all the boys in high school loved Yes, but girls did not. There were those who pretended to like Yes in order to gain cachet with boys. Funny, although I found Yes boring and droning in the 70s when they were on the air and the turntable constantly, it's fun to hear them now just because they remind me of my long-gone youth. Best wishes!

Not really. They were OK but really were one/two hit wonders. Rick Wakeman and his multiple keyboards became probably the biggest cliche of the era.

Every time I see someone with more than one computer on his desk, I still ask him if he was a Wakeman fan.

Saw them recently on a video of Montreux festival few years ago. Jethro Tull was on the same video and even they have aged better.

They are right up there with Rush, Styx,. Musically i would say they are slightly better then Rush but as a whole I think Rush has played better and more consistent shows and has more complete albums to their credit in the recent years. In the 70's though it was probably close to a tie.

They were taented musucians that made overbown cr*ppy music, at least from a rock perspective. It was bands like this that nearly killed rock n roll.

YES was just one of many... I think those days are gone with the advent of synthesized noise and a guitar...
