Something that is 'eerie' is strange, mysterious, and frightening. Example - In bed at night she heard the EERIE noise of the wind howling through the trees. He had the EERIE feeling that he had met this stranger before.

From Webster's New World Dictionary:

EERIE - eerie or eery
adj. -rier, -riest 1. [Now Rare] timid or frightened; uneasy because of superstitious fear 2. mysterious, uncanny or weird, esp. in such a way as to frighten or disturb --SYN. weird --eerily adv. --eeriness n.
