All time?
I have to go with Ella Fitzgerald.

Very prolific, shared duets with Louis Armstrong and she had range, style and even humor.

I like the new kids, Nneenna Freelon and Diana Krall but I have a soft spot in my heart for the old vets of jazz and blues.

Top Five
1. Ella
2. Billie Holiday
3. Sarah Vaughn
4. Etta James
5. Nina Simone

Each could easily be number one in my top five list depending on ... geez, if I had eggs and toast for breakfast they are so close.

Rounding it up to Ten.
6. Carmen McCrae
7. Bessie Smith
8. Maria Muldaur
9. Anita O'Day
10. Rachelle Ferrell

Today, my answer is Duke Robillard. He's jazz and blues at the same time. There is a sense of humor in his voice.

Betty Carter and Jane Monheit are some of my favorite jazz singers. Johny Hartman is really amazing too.

Absolutely Billie Holiday, and Janis Joplin wasn't bad.

I agree, I love Billie Holiday.

Not for certain here, but I think that as a more recent figure, Diana Krall is fantastic....this all coming from someone who doesn't care much for female vocals!

Just don't say Louis Armstrong! : )

i might have 0 problem with that. I very own ... in line with threat 8 cds. In my sequence he and BB King are opponents. Ray's early artwork sounded very like Nat King Cole's even right down to his singing sort. finally he stumbled on his very own voice and finally set the oftentimes going on.
