I am for religious freedom. However my objection to veils is only on two points:

1) Security threat:- I heard the news some time back that in Asia, some people use the borka (covers from head to foot) to smuggle drugs, arms and wanted criminals (and terrorists) across the borders. In Europe or US, the borka might be a security threat because you won't know if someone is carrying plastic explosive belts under it. As for the issue of covering the face only, I am not sure if it is a security threat, unless we are talking about female terrorists who abuse this to gain entry to high security areas.

2) Insult to men: I have often asked Muslims why they cover their faces. I was told that if men are allowed to women's face, then they will rape them. I have seen similar arguments here as well. I believe this is a disgusting theory and in effect shows a very low opinion of men in general.

Some govts (state, federal, local) have determined that any full facial covering is potentially a security threat, because it allows people to commit crimes without being identified.

This applies whether they are wearing a halloween costume, a ski mask, or a religious veil. In situations where there is a generally applicable law prohibiting a conduct for a valid reason, there is no real justification for giving a religious exemption.

So, anyone should be allowed to dress however they want in private, but in public a generally neutral law would take priority.

There is no reason for them not to cover their faces. Most of them are pig ugly (no offence to pigs) they are doing everyone a favour in hiding their faces. Also they can go without shaving for a day or two know one would know. It saves on paper bags, buckets and the amount a man would need to drink before he considers whether to lndulge in activities of a sexual nature. Gilette and the brewarys may loose out otherwise there is n harm done.

I don't understand how a western man (or other for that matter) cannot walk into a bank with a crash helmet on without being challenged, yet a muslim woman can go with a full veil and will be served. This is clear discrimination.

Yeah, sure, We should ALL where black masks covering our faces! Especially in banks....

We should ALL be able to where a black mask on our Drivers license ID. We can get carded anywhere and say, What? that doesn't look like ME? Look at my shifty eyes, the EXACT color!

When we get stopped by the police, we can say, you are just discriminating because I'm driving while masked! So what if my mask is the exact same description of the armed robbers who just held up that convenience store, you racists!
And NO! You can't tell me to take it off, it's against my beliefs...the belief that my husband is the only one allowed to see my real face, -- and if you saw my face, you would most likely want to rape me! so there!

It's discrimination if we all can't where a black mask everywhere we go.
Why not?

Unless their has been an alteration to the Koran I do not believe that anywhere in it does it say women should be veiled. I believe it cautions them to dress modestly which is of course open to interpretation/misinterpretation.
The truth may be that it is a sign of increasing radicalisation among Muslim women.

Aside from being a definite terrorist means of perpetrating evil, putting a woman in a tent with two holes for her eyes is NOT acceptable in our societies. And WE are still in the majority!
When in Rome,...........
I don't see ANY reason why we (the West) should be forced to accept their customs.
Sorry, my Muslim Brothers and Sisters, but you are pissing us off with your misplaced 'outrage' over us not being comfortable with your customs straight from the Dark Ages, and it has nothing to do with religion, it is used as a means of oppressing women.

This question is fundamently flawed, the point is muslims are allowed to wear veils and other garments, recently there has been a big debate surrounding it because of Jack straw the former foreign secretary said that it was hard to communicate with msulims who wore a veil. I can see where he was coming from because sometimes tehy can seem quite intimidating. The point is though in Britain we should no sanction people for being faithful. If they want to wear the veil thats their choice and it would be a sad reflection of our society if we were to deprive them of that right. another reason we should let them wear the veil is that we need to diversify our culture, many of the muslims are actually english and its good that there is good integration. The only thing is though its helping segregation

Although I am an unbeliever, I have no objection to Muslim women wearing the veil in public. I say this because if there is a ban, say on wearing veils, who will this affect people who might like to wear a mask of Tony Blair while taking part in a demonstration? Our liberties have been hard won, we should not ever give them up not one inch will I budge on this.

I saw a Muslim woman earing a black outfit, head to toe and a veil today. It did not bother me. What springs to mind when I see a Muslim to attitired is the word NUN. She gets total respect from me.
