I had to drive my 96 Firebird home while it was snowing last winter. They had to push me out of the parking lot, and I didn't dare stop, for fear that I wouldn't get going again. Most of the trip home was sideways, fishtailing, and finally, going about 2 mph. Not a lot of fun. But, love the car when the road is clear.

I can see I'm in the minority here, but there was a time when all cars were rear-wheel-drive and people still got out and about.
I've driven a front-wheel-drive Grand Prix near Johnstown in a good snow and I can tell you in those conditions it really doesn't matter what you drive, you have to be careful.
As it is, I drive my 2000 Trans Am every day to work, in all kinds of weather. It's not a off-road vehicle, so you have to stay on plowed roads and use snow or good all-season tires in the winter.
Think about it this way, it's better in the snow than all those two-wheel-drive pickups you see out there.
Wait for the roads to be cleared, install good snow tires, and be careful. You'll be fine.

your household has no clue(no offense). 4WD is a huge massive difference over a rear wheelcontinual motor vehicle, fantastically one which has no weight contained in the back. we stay on the point of one yet another, my GTA would not bypass even as there is snow on the floor. keep in concepts this previous wintry climate we had replaced into fantastically undesirable and is not regularly occurring for us. yet to assert 4WD isn't a large difference is a lot incorrect. once you're that worried and nonetheless desiring the Firebird...attempt to discover an inexpensive the front wheelcontinual beater tocontinual in the course of the wintry climate and nonetheless purchase the Firebird. that's a win win project lol

They are not very good on snow,,,rear wheel drive plus allot of power is not a good combination in those weather conditions,,,plus they are low to the ground,,,think of snow drifts & how much space is under that car..If it is a limited slip rearend or a positrack,,it would not be as bad as a standard rearend.. The difference is a standard rearend is one wheel drive..the passengerside tire...a limited slip or posi is two wheel drive,,,both rear wheels. Find something front wheel drive that is not real low to the ground,,,most vehicles have 6 inches of clearence,,,example pontiac grand am ,,grand prix. A firebird or trans am only has 4.

In a word, yes. This car is rear wheel drive, which tends to fishtail a lot. It is also low to the ground, which will make it lack traction in deeper snow. If you insist on buying it, make sure you have a couple of bags of sand in the trunk for traction and at least a pair of snowtires on the back wheels.

Rear wheel drive, plenty of torque. Great fun for drifting, not so great for handling in slippy weather. I've a Trans Am in the UK and she likes to throw her rear end out without much provocation. Snow chains will help but it's not the car I'd choose for snow :-).

I had an '88, and it was terrible. I used to dread going out with even a dusting of snow on the roads.
