Bleeding in the 3rd trimester is a possible sign of placenta previa, a serious condition where the placenta has implanted and grows either partially or completely over the cervix. When your cervix begins to thin out at this stage of pregnancy bright red painless bleeding occurs.
However - if you have had ultrasounds this should have been detected already since placental location is one of the main things they check.
Bleeding, usually with pain, can be a sign of the placenta prematurely coming off the wall of the uterus - called an abruption. Like previa, this is an emergency.
If the bleeding you are experiencing is just some spotting, and more dark red or brownish, it could be from cervical irritation, such as you might have following sex.
Blood tinged mucuos is often a sign that labor will begin in a day or two (loosing your mucous plug.)
If you just had a vaginal exam that could be the cause, especially if your doc was really messing around with the cervix.
In any case, you should call your doctor or midwife and let her/him know what is happening. Anything more than spotting, you probably need to get it checked out in the ER.

It is not normal to have bleeding during the 3rd trimester. Any bleeding at all should be reported to your OB right away. I didn't have any blood show at all until I went into labor and even then the bleeding wasn't terribly heavy. Call the doctor or go to the ER. You want to make sure you and baby are OK.

it is not normal to have bleeding during the third trimester. im 39 weeks and the only bleeding i have had recently has been from losing the mucus plug and recent exams to check for dialation. even that was just spotting. that was 2 weeks ago since i lost the mucus plug and i have still not had the baby.
if it is more than just spotting you should call the maternity ward at your hospital and talk to one of the nurses to see if you should go in.

Did you do anything out of the ordinary the day before? If so, that's probably the cause...Otherwise, if you are feeling the babe, etc., I would not worry too much...Might be worth putting a call into the doc though
