Kids love parties that make them the centre of attention. In short, they want to be involved in everything and run the show themselves, where ever possible.

So sit him (or her down), ask what he likes best. Eg: The type of cake, theme of the party, who they can invite and the type of presents they want.

On the big day, leave him to his own devices. Stay in the background and only get involve for necessary things like taking photos, cake cutting, manning the BBQ, getting him and his guests to eat or to arrange the items needed for games etc.

Trust me it will be fun for him to run his own show, rather than listen to mom or dad on what to do. But let him know, you're nearby and ready to help if he needs anything. Offer suggestions only if he asks or appears stuck.

First of all....other 12 yr. olds, esp. the opposite sex....
twister is a cool game that they like and they get to "connect" with eachother...it is not nasty mom, it is fun!!!!
For the same price as a DJ you could buy a kereoke thing, imagine the fun they would have with that, and it's a gift that keeps on giving, even mom and dad could give it a go!!!!! (when kids are gone or sound asleep!!!!!lol)///// Have fun and enjoy em while they are young...take the plunge, get the kereoke thing, they would rather hear them sing than a DJ!!!!

probably something that lines up with his interests... if its video games, set up a LAN party for him, where they can all hook up their systems and play together...

if its girls, maybe a pool party would work better for him...

if its sports, maybe you could reserve a gym for the night and have like a "lock in" with lots of food and fun sports to play... let him invite a bunch of friends.

not sure... gotta know what he's like...
