I live about three miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. When killdeer (shorebirds) fly in the fields around my house, I know that we will have severe weather within three days.

Birds, like fish, deer, and other animals, can feel a rise or drop in the barometric pressure. The birds would probably be blown in the water by a strong wind so they're smart and head in where there's shelter.
