I have a light switch that is connected to an electrical outlet on the west side of the room. The problem is that I need the light on the east side of the room. It would be unsightly and unsafe to run an extension cord across the room because it would cross a doorway. Any suggestions? Some sort of infrared switch or something conencted to the lamp perhaps? Is there such a thing?

Because of the archway, it would be very difficult and expensive to re-route the wires in the wall.

Go to the room above the west side wall and turn off electricity. Lift the floorboards to gain access. Remove light fitting from west wall, then withdraw the cable into the floor space. Use a junction box and extend the light cable so it will reach the east wall and then complete the task by wiring the light in its new location at the end of its extended cable.

You don't say if this is a two story house or single and, if you have a basement. A basement, no problem. Run the wires under the rafters and up the wall with a mouse.
If it's a single story, run the wires from the wall down, from the attic. Otherwise your going to have to run them across the floor and put a carpet over it, across the doorway.

You may be in luck if the light switch only controls either the top or the bottom outlet in the duplex outlet. Check it and if this is the case, shut the electricity to the outlet and reome the wires from the one that is controlled by the switch, then coneect it to the other recepticle's screws. Be sure to cap the ones that you diconnected.

Are you talking about a motion sensor on the light? You would have it on all the time but it would only light when you entered the room.
