Well I repair them for a living and you do have to remember all makers make cheap ones and better ones, I do know about every survey I have seen where they asked people who owned there laptop for more than a couple years, would they buy again, Toshiba always wins, I am not really a big dell laptop fan. You have to remember a laptop is pretty much a throw away machine after a major break if its out of warranty, you just cant run up and get a part and if you do find a part, they are not meant to just pop open like a desktop, repairs after warranty normally are WAY to much money for hardware repair unless its a hard drive or cdrom, anything else, its not worth fixing most of the time. Normally you get what you pay for, but keep in mind ALWAYS the warranty. When you buy this, have the thinking of it will only last as long as the warranty, because allot of times, that's all it does last. I would buy name brand, not some weird off brand. Check the actual specs, speed, ram and such, you can get a big fancy thing with allot of bells and whistles and it be a slow processor, I always still see new laptops for sale that are 1.6 gig, get a faster one, but on the other hand if you get a very fast one with lots of ram, it can be cheaper in many other ways to keeps cost down

Actually, if you are going to use a Laptop for just general computing then I think you are foolish not to consider some of the more reasonably priced Dells.
You might want to consider other brands but I don't know which I'd recommend to you.
I would avoid spending over $700 or $800 for a laptop that I only intend to do web browsing, word processing, music, etc. on.
I met a lady last week that spent $1700 on a Toshiba and she was totally unhappy with it. The point is, if you are not familiar with the technical side of laptops then you should have a friend that is familiar with them help you out. That lady spent a lot of money and got a laptop that was very low end in it's hardware and actual processing capabilities. So beware!!
Good luck.

A few things to think about when purchasing a computer.
1.) How long is the warranty?
2.) Does it have the features that you need and is it capable of expansion for future needs?
3.) How much do you want to spend?
4.) How good is the companies support service?
Most of these can be found by going to sites that sell computer equipment, they have reviews.
And if price is omportant never buy more machine then you think you will need in the next 3-5 years.
But the most important thing is to always remember You have to be happy with your purchase.

Get the cheapest one you can find that is preloaded with some type of OFFICE program IF all you want is to store files. ANY laptop will store files just fine. You'll need an office program to type up your papers using, for ex, WORD. The need for something more expensive comes into play when you wish to do stuff like play games or connect to the internet. I suspect, you'll want the latter so get one with a Modem for dialup or an ethernet port for hi speed.

As a computer expert, I really do recommend HP because Dell uses third party equipment which really messes up the system. HP makes their own parts. HP is more reliable.
Always get Windows Professional! It's stable!

Actually Dell is probably the most reliable laptop you could buy. Anything else isn't going to last you more than a year.
