I would think they are very generous. Life is not all about having the most money, it is about how you use what you have to bring joy to other people. If someone can afford a $50.00 tip then great for them for sharing. As for not being financially rich because of excessive tipping, or gift giving, I have two thoughts about that. One, by sharing, you do become rich in the way that it matters. It can be sharing cash from 1 penny and up, your time, or your talents. By sharing your gifts you make the world a better place. A person can be extremely rich but not have two sticks to rub together, look at Mother Theresa (God rest her Soul). Two, Oprah Winfrey gave away cars once to her entire studio audience, she is also very generous with her blessings in many other ways, and she is still financially rich. In fact, she is one of the richest women in America. Forbes calls her "America's richest African-American".

I would think they may have made a mistake. And I would certainly point it out to them.
"Sir or Mam, while I depend on tips to make my living did you mean to give this much?" If they did, then accept it graciously, if they didn't don't kick yourself for doing the right thing. Integrity is not something you can buy but you sure can give it away.
Peace.

It may have been a mistake and you should have said something. Maybe they can't see right or was in a hurry getting the money out....so I would have asked before I left.
