Craft kits are wonderful. They have pottery painting, paint by numbers, beading kits, spool knitting is cool too for that age girl.

Talk to her family and get some ideas.

Barbie & the 12 Dancing Princesses is big this year.

Find out if she has a Gameboy or a Nintendo or some game system and get a game for it.

Hello Kitty

My Little Pony

Polly Pocket

Art or craft supplies - beading kits would be good for this age.

you can't go wrong with craft kits. also, those bratz dolls are pretty in, personally they freak me out, and you either like them or you don't so maybe stay away from that one.

my sister is nine, and she's getting her ears pierced, so i got her a couple pairs of earrings, to start her collection.

when i was that age my mom always got me those educational kits, you know like ch ch ch chia! or those science kits. if you find the right one, those can be a huge hit, like a crystal growing kit.

my last suggestion is books. there are so many books for eight year olds it makes my head spin. there's american girl, babysitters club, bobsey twins, boxcar children, the magic treehouse, goosebumps, pretty much any book that comes in a series of a million, and is under an inch thick is a good bet for 8 year olds.
good luck!

Any young girl, and I should know as I am one myself, loves make-up and doing their hair and stuff like that. A small cosmetics kit with a couple of lip glosses, some brushes and that type of this is good for them, and they can't get into too much trouble!!!!
You can get them from Target, Kmart, Big W and places like that.

Keep it simple and general....interactive stuffed animal (Furreal puppy for $20)....arts & crafts (Make your own scrapbook or paint your own butterfly...this can be found in the toy aisles at any local department store)...good luck

If you don't know her then it's not really necessary. Keep gift giving a tradition among close family and close friends.
