I think you must go for it hey! There are great website building tools out there... For you, I would recomment a content management system. Try Drupal (http://www.drupal.org/) I think it is easy to use and has some great free templates that are easy to customise. If you want a slightly more complicated but similar system try Joomla (http://www.joomla.com/). These two are content management systems and they allow you to create websites without needing to get into the gory details of HTML, server side scripting e.g. PHP, ASP and databases e.g. mySQL. They make changing information and adding new pages, builing menus, etc a breeze. They already come with a lot of functionality (in modules) which will come in very handy for your church website. You can easily add a blog, image gallery, memebrship database, announcements, news, etc without a hussle. There are dedicated forums where you can ask other users of the content management systems stuff if you get stuck. You will then need to find a hosting service where you can host your site.

I learned how to make websites on my own, and after making many websites before, this is my current website.
http://chickensims.freehostia.com
This is the one for my neopets guild
http://thebillionairesclub.fateback.com
Getting these skills up this high however did take years. I first started making a website 5 years ago.
Its not really that hard, i use Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 -- which costs like 900$ but you can use free web design programs. The best is Yahoo geocities. geocities.com
The hosting service isin't that great, and im not sure that your church would perfer a more professional looking website to use as their official website, but its a good place for you to start learning.
I think i still have a lot more to learn about web design... And i want to learn more about things like Multimedia in Flash web design. I already have future ideas for chicken sims to get its own domain name, and what the site will be like, when its made entirely in Flash. But i will probably need to take college cources in this. I plan to go to college and major in aviation, and then after i get a job and a place to live, i will go back to a nearby college to commute to, and pick up some classes about web and multimedia web design there.

You can build a website by using Macromedia Dreamweaver, Frontpage etc on Windows or you can do it via notepad and html. Tha latter is the harder way, so for you Dreamweaver if you have it or Frontpage are excellent choices. They build the html code for you so all you have to do is edit the information you want on each page (kinda like just designing it). You can learn more about how to use each application by using its help within the program or by searching the internet.
Good luck

Age has nothing to with designing web sites. If you are not sure how to make websites, and want to learn how, pick up some books on web designing, or search for online tutorials on web designing.
If you want a web designer to design your church site for you, go to http://www.azurebutterfly.net
They will design a site for your church. Since it is a non-profit organization, they will design it free of charge.
