Why not just run mid-grade 89 octane gas? Different octane ratings may be mixed to average the octane. But you've got to get the perportions right to get the octane you want. For example, I mix 5 gallons of 93 with 5 gallons of 110 low-lead in my hotrod. With a 50/50 mix, it averages to 101.5 octane, which is what my engine needs for its compression ratio.
Contrary to popular belief, the octane boost in a bottle does very little for octane requirements. When it says it raises octane 4 points, it means .4. So 87 octane becomes 87.4 octane.
But for computer-controlled stock cars, use the mfg's recommended octane. Custom-built engines have special requirements. And '72-older cars usually had higher compression ratios, so they need as much octane as they can get to prevent detonation.

You can mix different octane gasses, but you don't want a HIGHER octane in an older vehicle because it tends to leave deposits. Check the manual for whatever you are using the gas for and see what the manufacturer recommends.

The only time I put premium in a car is when it has a high performance engine or if it is going to be run in the cold weather. It doesn't hurt to mix grades or brands of gas because they are all pretty much the same. I would find one brand of gas and stick with it. Good luck.
