who else has had to have their labor induced? how did everything go? just want some details because i will be getting induced in two days, which will be two days before my baby is due. i'm only 1cm dilated, my baby has just started to drop, and i am over 50 % effaced. he also weighs about 8 lbs, give or take a pound. that's one reason the doctor is taking him now. i am petite and my baby is kind of big for me.

Induction of labor is often the first intervention used in an otherwise normal pregnancy and labor which leads to a long line of more interventions, each with their own set of risk factors. Induction in and of itself is risky and you need to educate yourself before you do this.

Induction is epidemic right now and chances are your doctor is inducing because he/she induces all patients who don't go into labor spontaneously before he/she gets a chance. It is so much more convienent for them, and they take advantage of the fact that many women are tired of being pregnant and would like to 'get it over with'. Guessing that your baby is 8 pounds is a really bad reason. Where did that weight estimate come from? Ultrasound is notoriously WRONG on weight estimates, usually saying the baby is bigger than he is. 'Give or take a pound' - that is a huge difference if you think about it. Since ultrasound almost always over-estimates the weight that probably means your baby is 6 1/2 - 7 pounds! And lots of petite women have nice, big healthy babies anyway. And, babies only gain on average about 4 oz. per week from about 38 weeks on, so waiting for labor would not add significant weight at all. They just put on a bit more fat - which is GOOD for them!

Normal, naturally occurring labor is much safer for both you and your baby.

If you click here and scroll down this page you can read more about inductions and the risks. There is an info sheet you can print out on risks:

A really good website to check out is Childbirth Connection:
http://www.childbirthconnection.org/

Unfortunately their site is down right now for maintanence

You have the right to say NO to your doctor. You have the right to change your mind about agreeing to induction. If the benefits do not outweigh the risks you should really rethink inducing.

with my first child i was induced. in my experience it was good and bad. i was not informed that getting induced can actually make labor more painful until AFTER i was pregnant with my second child.

I was hooked up with everything I needed shortly after getting to the hospital. I was told that it could take up to 8 hours for anything to even happen. Well...shortly after that said I started contrations, which led right into hard painful labor, though that didnt last long because I started pushing. I was in labor for 25 minutes....that is all. Dont be scared that it will happen to you. I think my body just reacted differently to the patocin (the drug given to induce labor). I've also heard that short labors are more painful so that may have been the gist of my pain.

My second child was completly different. I wouldnt change a thing about either though.

Good luck and congradulations.

I was induced. I was in labor for about 12 hours. Then they made me push once and decided a c-section because I too, was small and I had a baby girl, weighing 9lbs 2oz. This could happen to you considering you are tiny!
Really there is nothing to having you labor induced. They just hook you up to IV and wait for the contractions, which usually come on strong. It is supposed to be faster as well, but I went 12 hours. But I also had an epideral as well.

Hopefully you won't get to read these because you'll have gone into labour naturally and you'll be too busy with your new baby. Sounds like your cervix is ripening anyway so hopefully you're body is doing what it should already.

Have you tried all the tricks in the book for bringing on labour? :

Long brisk walk (the pressure of baby's head on cervix will help)

Sex (the semen contains prostaglandin which help to bring on labour)

Curry (the spice makes the body release the hormone prostaglandin I believe. Besides that, having to run to the toilet and empty yourself will cause the baby to drop and put pressure on the cervix)

Castor Oil (between 30-50ml should have the same effect and possibly better effect than curry)

Nipple simulation (this makes the body release the hormone oxytocin which is the hormone that contracts the uterus)

So if you have some castor oil then eat hot curry for dinner, followed by a long walk, ending in hot sex including nipple stimulation, you should be holding your baby very soon.

Good luck!

I was induced for my last 2 kids and I'm being honest when I say that being induced will make your contractions worse. Don't be shy to get any drugs available to you. I've had 4 kids and the 2 that were induced hurt a lot worse. I hope I don't scare you but I'm being honest. Hope it helps thank god there are epiderals! (I've never had an epideral but watching the baby story they sure seem to be handling things a lot better with one)

Both of my deliveries were induced. The babies turned out great, my son is almost three and my daughter is five months. Everything went very smooth, and he weighed 7 5 and she weighed 8 8. From the time they broke my water and gave me the medicine to speed the process up, it took about three hours. Lots of luck!!!!

My wife was in a similar situation.(She is also petite) Hers differed from yours in that her water wouln't break, so they induced by puncturing the water sac. Everything went fine, and she and the baby had no complications. I would reccomend talking to your doctor about your worries and have him make you feel better. i.e. describe the procedure, answer your questions, and explain everything. You pay these people to do a job, sometimes we have to remind them.

My friend was induced, her labor only lasted 4 hours... which is unheard of for being induced.

G luck! Stay active up until they induce you, it will help you dialate all the more.

i does not. needless to say the newborn remains in there for a reason. that's diverse while you're late. yet to do it a week forward for no reason is kinda pointless. i will in effortless terms permit you comprehend how magical and specific that's to pass into hard artwork on you very own. i did no longer get the possibility with my first 2. my daughter became 10 days late and my son had a heart arrhythmia. So i became led to with the two. yet my 0.33 hard artwork began on it relatively is very own with my water breaking. IT became an exceptionally exciting journey that i does not commerce for something. so as somebody who has executed it the two tactics, i'd recommend you in effortless terms permit nature take it relatively is direction and permit your physique artwork because it relatively is meant to. it's going to be something you will never overlook. i'm no longer speaking appropriate to the discomfort. :)
