Generally I am not depressed, but having the both together is
enough to get me down. I have tried hormones, but am off
them due to the 2002 scare, and have tried prozac, red
cohost and soy pills to no avail.

unfortunately black cohosh, red clover, soy really don't do much to relieve the symptoms
immediately after you stop taking them the hot flashes are back with a vengence
So? why spend all the $$
go cold tukey..
you and your family will suffer for a few months-
your estrogen levels will balance out and you'll start feeling almost back to your origianl self
I say almost.. nothing will make you feel like you did PRE menopause

I went cold turkey... except for taking prescribed buSpar
every time I would get upset or Angy... I would get a hot flash..
I take the BuSpar 2x daily ( no addiction with this med) and I now only get a occassional hot flash
Md said there is a co-relation to mood and hot flashes and I agree 100%

As for the migraines.. you primary physician can prescribe meds to help
I have found extra strength Excedrin works for my mild migraines.. Imitrex for the whopper ones

Good Luck and hugs for whatever you decide to do to help yourself thru this time in your life

SarahLoretta - Migraines can certainly be very disabling, and I'm sorry to hear that yours are giving you so much trouble. I wonder if you can tell us what kind of injections you are getting. I don't know much about home remedies, but the treatment of migraines has progressed significantly in the last few years. Older treatments include ergotamine shots which you have probably gotten. More recent medications such as Imitrex, Zomig, Relpax, etc. are effective for many, but less effective for others. Botox injections are a promising treatment for patients who have failed multiple therapies such as beta-blockers, antidepressants, Topamax, and the above-mentioned drugs. It sounds like that might be what you are getting now. Another treatment which has shown promise in a very small study involves using red-tinted contact lenses. The theory is that they filter out specific wavelengths of light that can overstimulate receptors on the retina in some migraine patients and contributes to the photophobia that is typical of migraines. This study was done by Dr. Richard Garrison and Dr. Kathleen Saathoff at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown, TX. A third treatment that many got excited about was closing PFOs (a small hole in the heart that as many as 25-30% of the population will have) in patients with migraine headaches. However, a recent study called the MIST trial did not show any clear resolution of migraines in patients who underwent closure. Hope that helps - good luck to you!

That sounds awful. Pharmacies have blood pressure machines available to the public. You need to check your blood pressure a few times a week to rule out high blood pressure. It can trigger migraines and make you feel flush as well.
I take an herbal supplement called "Remifemin" that helps with the hot flashes and night sweats a lot. It is made by SmithKline Beecham.
As a migraine preventative, I am prescribed a low dose high blood pressure medicine. I still have other triggers but learning what they are and avoiding them has made a real improvement.
If you feel a migraine coming on take ibuprofen immediately. Sometimes they can be halted in early stages.

Best of health to you. I hope you get some good suggestions that help.

I have been suffering from migraines for some time now and have tried many things. For immediate relief in your case, I suggest ice on your head and a Frosty from Wendy's. I know it sounds silly, but they make my migraines feel better, especially if eaten fast. (It's like making a brain freeze work for you.) I have taken Imitrex and Axert. They work, but can be expensive and do not make me feel 100%. I recently started Topomax. So far, I'm impressed. There are migraine, and other, medical studies you may qualify for. I don't know if there are any in your area, but you can check out this web site: ppcp.org.

Headache is a pain in the head, scalp or neck. Headaches can be
caused by minor problems like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more
serious reasons like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and
meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can have harmful side
effects, so it is better to modify your lifestyle. More information

For hot flashes try black cohosh. For depression St. Johns Wort is excellent. Make sure you read the labels on anything you take and take it according to directions. Black cohosh helped me tremendously. It takes a week or two to start working.

Eat more soy, unless you have a thyroid problem in which case; stay away from soy.

Try eating a healthier diet and reading about menopause.

I got through it taking a chinese concoction called Dong Quai

dong quay should not be taken by people who are taking blood thinners or anti-coagulants

I think the liquid is more effective but it tasts so horrible you might prefer the pills
