There are a couple of easy ways...

1/ Go to a DIY store and get some pipe freeze. Lag it a couple of feet away from where you want to work on and freeze it. Whilst it is frozen do the connection then simply wait for it to un-freeze.

2/ Go to your hot water tank and secure the ballcock so it will not allow any more water into the tank, then go downstairs and turn on the hot taps until the water has all gone. Make sure you have your central heating or immersion heater off before doing this though...

3/ Go get a plumber :o)

It will depend on the type of plumbing you have. If you are not sure when you have used up your hot water, turn off the hot water boiler overnight. Next day try turning off the water feeding the tank to the roof which at worst will be controlled by tap under your sink or similar. The water from your hot tap should run out and if all goes well will eventually drain down. This is the time to fit a washing machine hot fill connection, and while you are at it a service valve to all easily accessible taps which don't have them fitted and behind your washing machine connector so if it fails you won't need to empty your hot water system. In UK these service valves cost a couple of pounds each.

Do you have a hot water cylinder? If so, see if there is a valve on the pipe bringing cold water into it from your cold storage tank, or on the one which delivers hot water from it to your taps. Turning that valve off should do the trick - open a hot tap near to where your washing machine, and if it flows half-heartedly, and then stops, you are OK (but keep a bucket handy). Of course, if you have a combi boiler, you probably won't have a cylinder.
Strikes me that many washers these days only have a cold connection, and heat the cold water up within the machine, so are you sure you need to connect it to the hot water pipe?

Don't have to. Can buy valves from B and Q that attatch around the hot water pipe. As you tighten, it bores a hole into it. cost about a fiver. Just connect the felx hose into the new tap. Hey presto! Clean clothes.

There should be a water shut off for the hot and cold line to the washer... If not just turn the main water off, hookup the new washer and turn it back on...

get a plumber if it is too hard for you to turn.

You don't want a flood.

righty tight, left to loosen - if at all you can turn it, remember
to tighten - go right; to loosen - to left.
