Hey Choc,
The Sun - Bringer of the Dawn. Beaming lights of healing, optimism, and warmth.
So, showing the light, hope, etc. implies optimism.
Religion is optimism in one sense. Wanting to do good, helping others, etc.
Optimists generally believe that people and events are inherently good. They have a so-called "positive" outlook on life, believing that things will work out in the end. A common conundrum illustrates optimism versus pessimism with the question, does one regard a given glass of water as half full or as half empty?

Paint a glass half full as that's what an optimist sees.
What makes us optimistic is things being bad and a sense that things can only get better. So a pre-curser to optimism is anything below average or bad as it's our good human nature that try to see a positive. Without it we'd all be suicidal.
I'd go with a painting of a tramp on the street, cold with nothing but 20p in his filthy hands and a blurred sign behind him offering hot tea or coffee for 20p.

How about a little poor boy who receives a large crate of horse droppings for Christmas and dives in and starts digging while yellin 's gotta be a pony in here somewhere!" Would that pass for optimism?

To me, as much as it is overused, the smiley face is the quintessential symbol for optimism. The sun also represents it. Bright colors in hues of yellow, orange-yellow etc. convey optimistic feelings. Symbols based on these ideas would show it for me. I believe hearing about or seeing good things happening to others makes people feel optimistic. These are just my humble opinions.

I usually paint abstract paintings, so I would most likely divide the canvas or paper in half diagonally from the top left to the bottom right, and draw or paint the bottom half with darker, deeper colors, and sort of fade them lighter and softer up to the upper half.. But that's just me.
In a contemporary painting you could draw the person or object sitting in a smaller cramped space on the bottom with the dark colors... and then in a larger, spacious environment on the upper with the lighter colors. This could also be portrayed as hope. That's how I would do it, you could also draw a person in a crowd, just smiling to themselves (themself.. I'm not sure)... Just a few ideas, hope I helped..

well, the opposite of optimism is pessimism, and so pessimism has connotations of dark, bleakness, negativity, doom and gloom, sadness, its also depressive.
optimism meanwhile is associated with ideas such as light, happiness, excitement, bright, hope, ecstatic, upbeat, positivity, prosperity.
you could have images of the sun, rainbow, angels, heaven, light, the birth of a child, happiness, laughter, of people being joyful and laughing, of your interpretation of peace, prosperity, of goodness. you can also have images of diversity- as diversity is an optimistic and as positive thing too, representing different nationalities, races, cultures, ages and both genders
these are just a few suggestions i've come up with. good luck with your project!

Mine is my daughter's birth and death date. I lost her last year to cancer. May she R.I.P. I haven't been on in a while. It was a tough time for me and I deleted my account but luckily was able to re-activate it and not have to make a new one :) It was RIP Giada (7.8.99 to 5.6.09) but now it's Elisabetta M has a 6 mnth old because the last time I was on Jethro (bub in my avatar) was only 3 or 4 months old. Now he is almost 7 months old :)
