what hole?

either way diameter is length across, straight through the middle point of the 'hole'

this line should then make two perfect (or close to perfect) semi-holes (or semicircles)

If the hole is circular draw a straight line through the center . It cuts the hole in two points. The distance between these two points is the diameter
