I am not sure that they ever were. I believe that they both acted in what they believed was their own best intrest, not out of friendship

There's nothing "GOOD" about either of them...! Neither man would hesitate to sell his own soul (never mind a 'friend') for what he thinks is his best possible career-gain opportunity on-offer...!!!
