can anyone suggest some effective ways to protect leather shoes (men).. whenever i wear leather shoes (black), they tend to get a lot of creases and they tend to crack from those creases. they also lose their shine pretty quickly.

i stay in asia (near equator) where the weather is always wet and humid. daily temperature averages around 32 - 35 celcius.

is it bad for leather shoes to get wet always (like from the rain)? how can i protect my pair of leather shoes?

any recommendations?

I learned this one from a leatherworker ...

Baby oil.

Baby oil is basically mineral oil, which works well on skin. Leather is a skin (please don't use it on nubuck or suede though - only on oil tanned leathers). Use it about once a week for a few months and work it well into the outside of the shoes with a soft cloth. Allow them to sit overnight for the oil to penetrate and treat the leather. Makes them amazingly soft and supple, does not affect most dyes and keeps them from cracking.

I use this method on all my leather shoes, purses and watch bands (even a Rolex one - I've never had to replace it because of cracking).

I assume you're living somewhere near Singapore, Malaysia or Indonesia. Hm. As an Indonesian girl, I totally understand because my boyfriend complains about this all the time. Here are some tips:

1. Have a pair of soft moccassins to wear when you drive (have 'em on stand-by in your car). Driving can cause lots and lots of creases! Lacoste has a variety of good driving shoes, or just go for cheaper brands.

2. To keep the shine, make sure you glaze your shoes with a transparent polish every single time you wear it. Polish with black once a week.

3. Keep your shoes in a cool and dry storage, away from direct sunlight because the rays will cause the color to fade. To minimize the humidity, put a small pack of silica gel in each shoe.

4. In times of rain or wet weather, be sure to wipe your shoes with a dry paper towel, apply the transparent shoe polish once the shoe is really dried off. Yes, too much exposure of wetness would ruin your leather shoes.

Good luck! :)

You cannot prevent he creasing because that happens when you walk, but to prevent the cracking you should use a leather protector.

It comes in the from of a spray or a gel, and just use a soft cloth and lightly buff the shoe. Do this regularily to keep your shoe in good shape.

Leather can be polished and conditioned with a leather lotion applied with a soft cloth.
