In short, militant gangs of Islamic fundies, who call themselves the "Janjaweed", backed by the government, are waging genocide on Black, non-Muslim groups in Darfur. They attack villages, killing and raping defenseless people. Hundreds of thousands have fled and are living in refugee camps in neighboring countries. The government denies that "ethnic cleansing" is its goal or that it even supports these troops, but it's common knowledge that they do.

According to a story in alertnet.org/Reuters, by Stephanie Hancock:

SENEIT, Chad-Sudan border, Nov 17 (Reuters) - "They attacked without warning at dawn," Ismail Abdallah Cherif said in a matter-of-fact way.

"There were many of them. They came on horses and camels. Without asking any questions they just opened fire. Some people were in their beds, others were making tea. The Janjaweed made no distinction. Children, women, grandmothers -- everyone was targeted. Only those who hid were saved," he said.

Like many hundreds of others, Cherif has fled over the border to Chad since the attack by the Janjaweed militia on his village of Khabesh in the Jebel Moon area of West Darfur."

Until recently, the U.S. and other countries have refused to intervene and thousands are dying every year. WHY don't we invade them like we did Iraq? NO OIL!

Recently, Sudan agreed to allow troops from Chad, as well as a (limited) U.N. peace-keeping force to intervene. However, it remains to be seen how much they will be able to accomplish, both due to lack of funding and support, and pressure from the Sudanese gov't.

There are some links below for more on this terrible situation. The first link gives a history of the genocide, maps of the area and a sobering table of statistics on the number of killings, wounded, rapes and people displaced and starving to date.

The second link has personal stories by victims of the genocide.

The third link is one site among many, trying to send aid. It also has a petition you can sign to Bush to intervene.

Millions of people displaced. Millions murdered, raped, or mutilated. A country in terrible distress.
The U.S.A. has thrown a little bit of money at it, but otherwise disregards the whole thing, allowing the genocide to continue unabated. Why don't we step in and help?
After all, we stepped in and "helped" Iraq.
Oh - yeah.......Iraq's got rich fields of easily-accessible, conveniently-transported OIL. Darfur doesn't. -RKO-
