- Are you using a complex screensaver - it runs in the background and eats memory. I had fun with mine, then changed it to blank.
- How many programs do you load at startup? Maybe you should check it out and ensure you are running just what you need.
-To do this: cl Start, cl Settings, cl Taskbar and Start Menu.
-cl Start Menu, cl Customize, cl Remove.
-cl the icon for the program you wish to remove
-then cl Remove.
-This will prevent the program from loading at startup, but will not remove the program from the hard disk.
-Are you in a large file? If so, save frequently to restore full memory access. (Your work remains in memory until you “save” it to disk.
1.Did you run an error check? Open My Computer,
Right-cl on C:, Select Properties, Tools – Run an Error Check ( checkmark “check all and fix); then run a Defrag
2.Are you using Yahoo Toolbar? Run a full Norton Antispy.
3.From IE, click Tools, Internet Options
delete cookies
delete files (offline files)
clear history (set days to save to 0 if you want)
click o.k., and Restart
3.click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools – run Disk Cleanup
4.click Start, Run ipconfig renew (type ipconfig space renew)
All these things should be done regularly. The more frequently they are run, the less time they take.
-Note: Games and videos are mostly graphics. Graphics create large files. If this doesn’t help, you should consider getting more memory.

The following steps should speed up your PC:
1. Run Disk clean-up. Then delete unused files. (start>program>accessories>sys... tools> disk clean-up)
2. Check for disk errors. (right click on a disk-drive>properties>tools >error checking, then restart)
3. Run disk defragmenter.
4. Delete cookies. (you can do it from your browser options: tools>internet options)
5. Delete cache or temporary files. (you can do it from your browser options) or, click on 'start", 'run', type 'temp' then click ok. Whatever shows up, just delete.
6. Delete all history files. (you can do it from your browser options, or, CTRL + H, then delete)
7. Empty recycle bin.
8. Delete unused icons & short-cuts from anywhere including desktop.
9. Uninstall any software or game that you use only once or twice in a week.
10. Delete temporary internet files. (you can do it from your browser options: tools>internet options)
11. Delete all recent files. (click on start, click run, then type "recent", delete all the files which show up)
12. Run a full virus scan. If any threat found, eliminate that completely.
13. Run a software which can remove any spyware or adware.
Like: Ad Aware, Windows defender etc.
If you did these all at the same time, restart your computer. All these to be done once in a week if possible, depending on the frequency of use of your PC.
* Updating: (Needed only when updates are available)
14. Update your Windows by installing latest updates.
15. Update your audio & video drivers.
16. Update softwares, browsers, games that you use.

- add more RAM.
- delete old files, back up those you want to keep to external storage.
- uninstall unused programs, especially if you have the installation disc.
- use Winpatrol to cut down the programs that load on Startup - not security software. They'll still be available from your Start menu.
- Run anti adware, anti spyware and anti virus scans at least once a week.
- use Ccleaner.
- defragment the hard drive once a month.

Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Theres a list of security software on my blog.

All computers need regular maintains, 1st go to your tools menu on top...click on it, then into Internet options, in there you will clean history, cookies, and temp Internet files, when you do the temp files, another box will pop up asking about offline content, you will check mark all of those as well and say yes.
Once that is done, go into your start menu, and to do this you click on start......then run ......then type in msconfig....then click on start menu, uncheck everything in there, and restart your system.
Once rebooted, you are going to go into program files, and look for accessories, then system tools........then look for disk cleanup, clean this, and then repeat this process to get back to defrag, to defrag (which should be done weekly) you are going to 1st....analyze........2nd ....defrag.
Finally you want to download awaware and spybot search and destroy, these are free programs that get rid of spyware, is is a major culprit in slowing down your system, and run those and then reboot. Last of all you need to scan your system for viris, if you don't have a viris scanner, there is a user friendly free version called AVG, you search this and download, and once downloaded update it then run.
All of the above should get your system up and running faster. Good Luck

Please have the patience to read ALL of these:
1.Download CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ and run it once daily before shutting down your computer. It removes all the trash files that are created while surfing through the net. Use its Issues section once every 2 weeks to delete all the unused registry keys. If you have a lot of Auto Start entries, then you can remove them from its Tools>Startup. But keep the important ones like firewall and the real-time protection shields of your anti-virus and anti-spyware.
2.Keep a decent anti-virus, a strong firewall and two anti-spyware in your computer. Always keep the real time protection shield(or resident shield) of the anti-virus and one of the anti-spyware active. Update them and scan your computer once every week with both the anti-spyware and once every 2 weeks with anti-virus. I have given the links to some free and good anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall; get them all:
AVG:
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/set...
AdAware SE:- http://www.download.com/ad-aware-se-pers...
SpyBot Search and Destroy: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/spy...
Comodo Personal Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/d...
Never keep two anti-virus or firewall on a single system. If you are already using a good anti-virus or firewall, then you need not download the corresponding one.
3.Keep a virtual memory booster as an auto-start entry. It frees the clogged RAM. I use RAM Booster, which is very effective. Here is the link to download it:
http://www.download.com/rambooster/3000-...
After downloading it, follow the steps:
*.Cilck on Edit>Options and tick the follow options:
1.Set auto optimisation on
2.Show CPU usage
3.Start minimised
4.Launch automatically at start up
Also, increase the auto optimisation level and 'Mb of RAM to free at auto level' as per your requirement.
4.Keep at least 35% of your C: free. Transfer all the music, image and video files to other drives.
5.Defragment your hard drives(especially C:) once every month. To defrag, go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Defragment.
6.Get the free Google Web Accelerator to boost up your computer speed.
http://webaccelerator.google.com/
All these will most certainly speed up your computer. Good Luck!
