I guess it's rare these days to address parents with such formality. But I won't be surprised if some more traditional people in certain cultures do the equivalent. I know many Chinese families don't do the familiarity thing that Western families do - nothing sick about it, just that they're not used to being casual in the parent-kid relationship (being used to different family dynamics is NOT being sick). It's still pretty unthinkable to call parents by their first names even over here in Singapore where we're a lot less traditional.
And contrary to what gangstaboy thinks, I don't think there's anything wrong with watching older movies. Just because I want to watch, say, To Kill A Mockingbird, doesn't mean I want to start talking with a Southern accent and call my father Atticus.

I only call my parents MOTHER and FATHER...calling them mom and dad is just disrespectful!
As for Sir yes i say that sometimes like when i am speaking to an older male and i don't know who he is.

Only mom and dad - my parents.
Sometimes I do use Sir, but that is in joke only.
But, even my parents didn't talk like that with their parents.
