about 10 yrs. ago on New Years eve, I started handing out a silver dollar to all my guests.
it is a superstition for sure, but if you start the new year with money in your pockets you won't ever be broke.
of course that means for me, all year, money is leaving my pockets...LOL

Having significant others family Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner at our house instead of all his family going to location his ex wife arranged. It was an hour or more away for most of the family. The family had been going there for at least 10 years or more. The family was ready for a change this year.
It was in town were they lived when they were married. The remain minor children still live in the town but they are with us for the holidays so it works out great this way.
It was a space issue. No one had enough space at their home to have the dinner. Also while he and ex were married, it was to make her happy.
We have a place big enough to have everyone over plus we have access to clubhouse. There is more than enough room.
And it is only about 30 minutes tops for everyone now.
Last year it was really uncomfortable for everyone. But this year the ex monster wont be here. Yea.
ok that was mean but she is not a nice person.

I haven't made any.

My DAD invented a whole new holiday, Charlie Chicken Day.

It starts and ends with silliness.

It started about 35 years ago. Maybe 100 people now celebrate it or at least send a card.

The Mormons showed up unexpectedly one Charlie Chicken Day, they were invited to join the festivities. They never came back. Even for the nice home cooked meals. I guess they couldn't reconcile Joe and Charlie.

First - Email tradition & electronic
I have relatives all over the US yes including Hawaii, so I sent them holiday free (my favorite word) electronic cards (yahoo has them too)......this allows us to keep in touch with what we're doing...............free!
Even the cell phone allows me to keep in touch with those I only call a few times a year...just to make them know that I think about them.....and we have a pact....keep praying for everyone...yes even our distant relatives...always!

This is from my mother who passed in 2002: Get Tuned Up - before the holdiays, do your hair, take time to take a luxurious bath or shower, do your nails, and don't forget to smooth your skin and especially your feet with lotion. This helps you smile more because you're taking care of yourself. This makes it easier to face whatever the holidays demands because you're taking care of number 1!

Walk or go up and down stairs 3-5 minutes each day.

Smile - everytime you pass a mirror, yes a big smile make you feel better, and then you see how your own smile lights up our own world, and it's something you can give to others...just your smile!

Creativity:
I buy a blank canvas - as large as the mood suggests....and I keep paints ...all kinds on hand. I have a plastic tablecloth (from the dollar store) under the canvas on a table...with the blank canvas and paints & brushes. Whenever the mood leads, that is what I or anyone else can paint...or add to the painting...I try to date it and then it has meaning from the holiday.

Gratitude:
Thank you GOD for everything - for all our neighbors and friends...when you think about it..that covers everyone in the world because...everyone is a neighbor...some we just haven't met yet.

In my family we tease each other... a lot. We are worse than the kids at school.
