Safe Mode? Piece of cake.
When you turn on your PC, as soon as you see the system loading, press and hold down the F8 key. You will enter DOS. If memory serves, Safe Mode was the 3rd choice, or F5. Watch it here.

After you are in Safe Mode, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and run a Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, and a Defrag. It will probably take some time if this is the first time you have run these. We are advised to run them about every two weeks. In this way, time is greatly reduced.

Don't be too quick to delete hidden and "unimportant" files unless you are sure you created them and not Windows -- or you will find yourself in a world of trouble!

All Windows operating systems have a defrag utility. But before you defrag, there are several other things you can and should do. You should download, install and run SpyBot. Download, install and run Ad-Aware. If you are using Windows XP, run Disk Cleanup by clicking on Start, Programs, Accessories, and System Tools.

And please don't go deleting files when you don't know what you are doing. You could very well end up having to reformat and reload Windows because you deleted the wrong thing. Hidden files are hidden because the system needs them.

A much better defrag is a free one by Auslogics. From this website, click on download. It is twice as fast as Windows's defrag.

For Windows XP

If the computer is running it is best to shut down Windows and then turn off the power.

Begin by first clicking on the Start Button and then click on Turn Off Computer.

Now click on the Turn Off red colored icon to shut down your computer system.

It is best to wait between 15 to 30 seconds before you turn your system back on.

Turn on your computer and start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.

Some Computers may display a keyboard error message if you begin tapping F8 too quickly.

Restart your computer again and begin tapping the F8 key a brief second or two later.

When the Windows Advanced Options Menu appears, Choose the Safe Mode option and hit Enter.

Windows will now boot your computer up in Safe Mode.

To defrag -
For Windows XP

Begin by first clicking on the Start Button.

Then move your mouse over the All Programs icon to display all Start Menu folders.

If your Start Menu is set to the Classic View, move your mouse over the Programs folder instead.

Now, move your mouse onto the Accessories menu folder until it expands.

Then move your mouse onto the System Tools menu folder until it expands.

Now Click on the Disk Defragmenter icon to launch the program.

Then use your mouse to highlight the drive that you want to Defragment?

Then click on the Defragment button located on the lower left hand center of the screen.

Windows XP will analyze your drive first and then display a visual estimate of the final results.

And Windows XP will continually show you a progress indicator bar depicting its progress.

When Windows is finished it will ask you if you would like to quit the Defrag Program.

Select YES to quit the Disk Defragmenter Program and then reboot your computer.

i individually might persevere with the defragment. it is going to basically take a protracted time when you consider which you haven't any longer executed it for it slow. I even have my scheduled as quickly as each and every week, i do no longer even be conscious it working contained in the history even with the undeniable fact that it does it in approximately 10 minutes. wish this permits L.T.

My recommendation; If you want to really clean up your system, download the latest CCleaner and use it FIRST, then defrag the hard drive. CCleaner will clean the REGISTRY and FILES on the system and get rid of the accumulated junk your system has.

defragging won't speed it up much. how much space is left on your C:\ drive? If there is some space, then you should be fine. get some more memory or check for spyware and stuff.
