Okay, so we've been talking about this at work lately.
People all over the world eat all kinds of meat. Cows, pigs, chickens, dogs, fish, whatever they can swallow.

So, the question is, Why don't people eat horses?
It's a silly question, but I'd like to hear some serious answers.

So far we've determined that if you own a horse, it's much more valuable as a horse, than as food. We've also determined that the meat may, or may not be that great. And finally, is it possible that horses carry some sort of virus or disease that humans wouldnt want to consume?

This is a very interesting & thought provoking question - especially since we all know the common phrase. However, I don't really have an answer other than agreeing with the fact that a horse is more valuable alive, but then again, cows aren't exactly cheap.

People DO eat horses, just not in America and the UK. Horsemeat is very much like "over-lean" beef, and is a much less cruel crop than beef. Cows are bred for beef, and killed young before their meat becomes too tough; Horses, on the other hand, can live a full life as working animals or pets, and can be slaughtered at a ripe old age and still yield good meat. Unfortunately, because of predjudice against horse-flesh, most horses end up in dogfood cans.

Lucky dogs!

That horses are not commonly eaten by people
in the United States is simply one of those food
prejudices, mostly irrational, that are common in
many places. Different people just have different
prejudices. Horses were for riding and often were
viewed as friends or pets, so they weren't to be
eaten.

Actually there are places where horse meat is
sold for human consumption in the U.S. When I
was in graduate school in Tucson many years ago
there was a place that sold horse meat for food
in the city. When my friends and I were going on
a field trip to Mexico we often bought a horse
tenderloin, at 45 cents a pound to take along. It
is very good eating, in my opinion better than beef.

Horse meat is consumed in some European countries, notably France, considered a delicacy.

The US had several slaughter houses for horse meat, one in Texas, for exportation. Our government just enacted a ban on these. I supported the ban, along with my Representative. The democrats vigorously opposed it. I watched the debate live, on TV. Nancy Pelosi went bananas when it passed. Wonder why? Hmmmm?

"Old horses" were not being slaughtered. Young ones were and were being bred for that purpose. Rustling was prevalent.

How many centuries have horses been man's friend and only means of transportation? Think about it.

While working on a game ranch in Africa, I ate zebra (very closely related to horses) meat regularly and it tasted great.
I think a deep rooted cultural prejudice exists in Western culture against eating an animal owners have a much more personal relationship with (like horses, dogs, etc.) than those they don't (like cows, sheep, chickens etc.).

Its a rare delicacy in some Asian countries, like in the Philippines, some people make it as a business of selling horse meat jerky. But like i said, its very, very rare.

The reason why people don't eat horse is because they are mainly for sport, and in asia, a beast of burden.

We use them to pull carriages. Since the animal's service is essentail and contributes to gaining income, people who operates horse carriages, gets attached to their animal, and if ever the horse had an injury and dies, they don't eat it. They just properly bury it.
