her gut might not be ready for solids (yes, rice cereal is a solid, even if it's watered down or added to formula or milk!) and she might be having a hard time digesting it.

I have never heard of a ped recommending rice cereal for reflux. In fact, breastmilk is better for reflux because it is easy to digest. There might be something that you are eating that causes the reflux. For our son, it was dairy, wheat, and nuts. I would definately do more research on this issue. The link below has great information about Reflux.

The signs that a baby is ready for solids are:

Has teeth
Can sit up unassisted
The tongue thrust reflex is gone
showing interest in your food

I wouldn't give anything (even rice cereal) before then.

Health Canada changed it's recommendations over a year ago to starting solids at 6 months, rather than 4. I'm wondering if your baby is waking as she's having trouble digesting. The digestive system is among the last to mature in a baby's body, hence the change in recommendations. You may be able to address the reflux by placing a thick towel or pillow beneath the crib matress so that your baby is slightly elevated, without risking her getting tangled up with items in the crib (plus, the towel or pillow will stay put under the mattress). Could you try sitcking with breastmilk and formula (if you feel the need to supplement) for another two months?

I think the doctor needs to deal with the congestion first. I know when I'm congested I don't sleep well. And don't worry about the "she's too young for solids" answers. Most babies are started on rice cereal by 8 weeks. It's less a solid than it is a thickener. My kids never slept more than a couple hours at a time before I started them on cereal.

Make sure that you are making it a VERY thin consistency...just like 1 tsp cereal to 3 tsp liquid. If it is too thick then it makes a bigger chance of the baby becoming constipated which would hurt her tummy and that would explain why she was waking so often. And you never know when they'll go through a growth spurt...all baby's are different so you can't rule that out either.

that is weird, i had the opposite with my son, he was not sleeping so i started giving him cereal and he slept all night cuz he was no longer hungry, maybe you should go back to the doctor, i would hate to give advise when there could really be something wrong! you might want to call them cuz maybe you did not make the cereal thick enough to fill the baby up! or maybe you could try a different cereal like the oatmeal which is alittle heavier.

4 months is very early for solids, particularly if a firm diagnosis of reflux hasn't been made. When a baby's digestive system is immature, solids can cause digestive discomfort and this can cause them to wake more often at night (see http://www.homemade-baby-food-recipes.com/ready-for-solids.html ). I would discuss this with your doctor again and see if there is any other way of dealing with the congestion.

She may be waking up more because her tummy aches because she can't really digest the cereal yet. Sounds to me like you were better off before. WTH can cereal do to help congestion? I'd stop it.

she may have a belly ache... 3x a day for a 4mo old is alot... for solids that is... my son is 8 months and his pediatrician told me to start feeding him 2-3 times per day about 1 1/2 months ago... you should only feed your 4mo solids once a day... she still needs MOST of her nutrients from formula or breast milk... do keep in mind that each child is different... and what our pediatricians tell us to do for our children may not be the right things for our children... if i was you, i'd cut back to one solid food feeding a day and see if that helps...

that might have been too big of an adjustment for her all at once. start small with just 1 feeding of cereal right before bed..and then gradually increase it.
