Yes and no. Printers use a number of technologies for quality prints such as photos. Dpi (dots per inch) is only one of those technologies. For an example, printers also use what is called "color mapping technology". This technology tells the printer where to spray the ink, how much of it to spray, and when to spray it. A printer can have an unbelievably high dpi, but if its color mapping technology is poor, the prints simply will not look that great.
An example is the Kodak Easyshare photo printer. It has a simple 300x300 dpi printing resolution (generally, printers have around 2400x1200 or 4800x2400 dpi). Despite the low print resolution, photos printed on the Kodak Easyshare printer look as good as photos you would get from Wal Mart.
But to really answer your question, it depends on the brand of printer you are using. HP and Canon are rated the two best printers and Epson comes in a close third. It seems, though, that HP gives the best prints for your money.

Hi!
Only if you have a pretty large lens, since 1200/2.5 is close to...500 then, you have like 500 points per mm, which is quite small (very good quality).
Now, double that...
1000 points per millimeter is photographic.
However, most pictures do NOT go above 1200dpi. 2400 is like rocket science!
Good luck!
