Most of these vehicles have diesle engines. The engine life is extended greatly by not cooling and warming the engine as often.

There are many different reasons why truck drivers leave their engines running, but the most common reason would be heat. Diesel engines dont use spark plugs to ignite the fuel, they use heat and compression. Diesel engines don't run very well if they are too cold.

Also, they compressed air used to operate the brakes is supplied by the compressor mounted on the engine. Therefore, leaving the engine idling keeps the engine warm and the air pressure up, so they are ready to travel again.

There are many reason fro their trucks to be left on
have multiple electronics on board and would drain battery if left to long
climate control- who wants to climb in a freezing vehicle after haveing a shower at truckstop
less fuel to idle then it is to start if stop is less then 20 mins
some drivers are just inconsiderate and dont care about the enviroment
there are alot of reasons but these just the top few i could think of.
Been a driver for 17 years and i leave mine running most of the time.

alot of times because it is cold outside but other than that it could be because they have an air leak and if they shut the truck off they would have to wait for the air to build up again before they can move the truck (100lb psi) before a semi will move.
