I have done a lot of academic work on this.

When the populace feels threatened, they tend even more to vote for someone who conveys strength.

This is tough for this category.

Short term influences are more definitely the more important determinant than facts, or long-term trends.

I always hate it when I have to refer to this individual, but David Icke is actually onto something with his Problem-Reaction-Solution thesis.

Icke is a loon, but has that one strategy correct, and it isn't a new one. All you have to do is convince the populace that there is a problem, and pay attention to and validate certain reactions which can be addressed by offering a solution.

Oh, and Icke is probably wrong in his position that the world is being manipulated by shape shifting reptilian overlords from the sixth dimension, but the strategies he describe have a basis that is relevant to modern culture.

A short term influence - rain, can have a huge influence on voting behavior...also, the whole idea of an "october surprise" is an event, usually dramatic but short lived, which can influence voting behavior...I thnk this is because people are busy and often do not prepare as well as they could before an election. By have no set opinion voters become susceptible to last minute events affecting their votes...

I think my core beliefs usually dictate for whom I will vote but also I believe the best candidate for the job in my opinion holds a lot of sway for me no matter the party affiliation.
