Timing belt may be a tooth off, as for the noise, could be a pulley, if not the timing belt was put on too tight.

The community Toyota keep recommends changing the timing belt each and every 60k in warm climates like Texas. The timing belt (to no longer be puzzled with the alternator/water pump/compressor belt) is roofed and for that reason isn't readibly viewable. If the timing belt breaks, each and every of the valves are bent in a 2d and the engine must be rebuilt. Is is a pair of $3000 interest vs. a $a hundred belt.

check the timing belt, sounds like its not on right.put the crank on top dead center then turn the cam till you see a guage hole and then put something like a drill bit in the hole to keep it from turning, loosen the tensioner, then install the belt, sdjust the belt so you can twist the belt half way and then tighten the tensioner.sounds like its off a tooth or 2...good luck, hope this helps.

wandering rpmsis a sign of a vaccumn leak. Thay also make funny noises. Have the guy that repaired it re check every thing he did. I have found that most new problems are related to the last thing i fixed. Have a fun day.
