They don't last forever. Once you get them , you usually have a limited amount of time (30 to 60 days) to use it, i.e. get married. It's different in every state. Call your county clerk's office. They can tell you how long you have.
Once you get married, however, that's it. You don't have to "renew" it. It's not like a driver's license.

I dont know about in your state, but in maryland you have 6 months to use it then you have to get a new one after the 6 months if u didnt get married
