Why don't we appreciate good music anymore? Why do we mock artists with real talent?

Because he doesn't sing about his bitches.

Seriously, I love Barry Manilow, and I have since I was a kid. I know people think it's lame, but I don't really care. The guy is incredibly talented, like you said.

As for why we don't appreciate good music anymore, a lot of people do. Sadly though, what is played on the radio is "catchy" at best, and some people think catchy equates good. Also, radio music is safe. It doesn't do anything creative. It just follows crap formulas for music that sells.

Artists like, say Peter Gabriel, get pushed out of the mainstream because he has intense lyrics and experimental sounding music (at times). And it makes people uncomfortable because it sounds "weird."

Because styles change. I'm a big Frankie Valli fan, but my son thinks that those songs are cheesy. When I look at some of his music I kinda roll my eyes. Yes Barry Manilow is a tremendously gifted singer and entertainer! No question. But sometimes people don't appreciate the talent of individuals. Barry belongs to the old school, when music was classy ( I don't mean this as an attack on newer stuff so don't get me wrong ). He's along with talents such as Sammy Davis Jr., Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and others who had great music. I'd be willing to bet that some of Barry's critics if they heard some of his songs and didn't know that it was him, they would find themselves enjoy it. I find that people like to do the same with Micheal Bolton. Strange isn't it?

I love Barry Manilow songs - I love any song that you can understand the lyrics to. There aren't many of them these days. I'm just 28, but my favorite music is from when I was just little listening to the radio stations that played the 60s, 70s, and 80s music. I think the kids now are only worried about what their friends are listening to. Too many followers and not enough leaders! I think I'll listen to "Open Arms" by Journey - now there's a classic!

I like his songs as I find them romantic! This One's for You, Copacabana, I Write the Songs, Can't Smile Without You. These are just a few that I like, Barry has so many that if you just listen to you will connect with the feeling!

I LOVE Barry Manilow, I too don't understand why anyone makes fun of him. I don't think he wrote some of the greatest songs of the 70s, he wrote some of the greatest songs of ALL TIME. Anyone who doesn't like Barry Manilow is stupid.

I do like Barry Manilow, I don't understand songs of today, because people just talk in the song instead of singing it.
A good/great singer doesn't have to dress good or sexy, or worry about looks when the voice is great.

When I was a pre-teen I was in love with Barry Manilow. His song Mandy made me all warm and fuzzy inside. I still like his songs but he has really become an ego manic.

There's only one word that explains it: IGNORANCE. Manilow had a lot of hits in the 70's and he is still performing. He has a lot of fans...and I think the only thing that explains the mockers is what I said above and maybe just plain jealousy.

Ironic fact about Barry Manilow: He didn't write "I Write The Songs". (It was written by one time Doobie Brother, Bruce Johnston).
