As plenty of people have pointed out, the correct grammar for your question should be "How tall WAS George Best?". That said, I can't see why the question has three thumbs down. It's not as ridiculous a question as some I've seen on here.
As for the answer to your query: Somewhere between 5ft8 and 5ft9 seems to be the general concensus.
