Some people just have a natural inclination for one over the other. Maybe they grew up with dogs or cats and therefore prefer them. Or maybe one fits better into their lives than the other. Like cats don't need to be walked every day and prefer to be alone a lot more than dogs do so if you have a busy schedual then a cat might be better for you. But if you are the kind of person who wants a really sociable animal that you can take to the park a dog might be better.
I have had a cat for 9 years so obviously I like cats more than dogs because I've had a lot more experience with them and know the species. But I'm sure if I were to get a dog I would fall right in love.

I'm not really sure why most people prefer dogs over cats, but you're right, that sure seems to be the case. You can walk dogs and bathe them. Although dogs tend to be more cuddly then cats, many cats can become so freindly and cuddly that some even sleep in their owner's bed!!! I personally prefer cats over dogs slightly, because cats are more independent, take less of your time, don't need to be walked, don't eat as much, don't get so huge, don't need to be bathed, and don't even need to be taken to the vet unless you want them to be fixed (I have an outdoor cat who is about 6 years old and the only time we took her to the vet was to get fixed/I don't believe she has ever had any shots in her entire life and she is just the dandest little thing; she always puts a smile on my face).

I have a dog and a cat. I probably like my dog more: When I have a day off work, he goes everywhere with me, he just loves the attention. At the end of the day after he's had his dinner, he sits in the lounge with me at my feet and he's so happy. He usually tries to sit on my knee, i've explained to him that he's not a lap dog (he's a staffordshire terrier, 25 kilos!) but that hasn't really helped much! He's just so adorable.
I have a cat, who eats, sleeps and goes to the toilet. That is all he does. I find a mouse in the house somewhere and get the cat to catch the mouse. He stands there looking at the mouse as if to say "Yeah a mouse, and the point you woke me from my sleep is??" He doesn't do anything! He is so lazy.
so anyway, I think people like dogs more because dogs actually do stuff. You can take them places, and they seem to appreciate the time you spend with them. Whereas you give your cat a little tickle under the chin while hes asleep on YOUR pillow and he scratches your arm off. Little s h i t!

I love all animals, but personally I prefer dogs over cats. Reason: Cats are too independent. Occasionally you will find a cat that loves to lay in you lap, be rubbed and loved and will come when called. But a dog, if trained, will do just about anything you want it to. I have a Pomeranian and a 1/2 American Pit bull-1/2 Walker Coonhound and I am seriously buying a double-seated recliner just so I can have a place to sit. They aren't dogs, they are 'babies'! Ur, humans?

I am a dog lover my German Shepherd goes every where with me. He is like my shadow, if I am scared he is by my side. I don't think a cat has that much loyalty and I am also allergic to cats which is another reason I don't have a lot to do with cats. I did keep and look after a big white cat that was dump until he got cancer had to be put down.

Dogs are needy, just like people. Dogs and people serve a purpose for each other. Most cats are independent. Affectionate, but independent. I like both dogs and cats. I don't have a preference one way or the other.

Some people are violently allergic to certain types of cats and cats leave hair all over when they shed. Some dogs don't shed. Outside cats come in contact with many more allergins as they are not on a leash generally. I mean just think of a cat carrying a mouse into your bedroom and dropping it on your pillow?

I personally prefer cats ............. though I am not anti dog. I have watched very loving people with their dogs and it appears to be companionship. I also have a belief that many people who prefer dogs tend to be "control freaks" and dogs are more easily controlled then cats. I really mean no disrespect by this it is just an observation.

ok,
I have had a cat(s) my whole life. My family never had a dog. We never liked dogs. As far as I knew they were stinky and would "go" in the house. My mom has always liked dogs but, never had one. A few years ago I got my mom a dog (adorable shih-tzu) for her birthday and come to find out everyone likes the dogs better than the cat. They are more playful, humble, sweet, cute, not too stinky, they "go" outside very well, they want to please, they love to play and make you happy.
Cats are just.........There.
Well, the cat likes to play sometimes when she "feels" like it.
I sitll loves cats though, with their moods and all.
