He is now a US citizen. When his son is born, will he be an African American?

No, the term "African American" only applies to people with black physical features who vote Democrat.

For instance, if you are only half black, like Barack Obama, but are in the Democrat Party, then you are still "African American."

But if you are fully black and a Republican, like Michael Steele, then you are an "Oreo" or an "Uncle Tom."

Did that help?

No. I think that is more like the joke that Angelina Jolie did on Saturday Night Live because she is of African Descent by passport but not by genetics she is of course European by descent. The only people who use the term African-American are blacks. We must remember Africa is a continent and since many of us do not know our home country (which we would use if we knew it) we use Africa as a catch all but when someone knows thier country then it is more appropriate to use thier country of origin. My wife is Ugandan so she will be a Ugandan-American. I am African-American. To call her African american would take a part of her idenity and she might be offended about it. Like calling an Italian a European-American. They are Itailan. End of story or an Italian-American at best.

NO,because he was born in Africa not America...if he is Afrikans(White South African)people usually use that.So Afrikaner-American would be correct I do believe or whatever country they were born-American if they were born here but of Afrikaner descent.I suppose you could refer to them as Afrikaner-American since they became a citizen.

Using Terms such as African American,Europen American,Asian American is dumb to me because being born in a continent doesnt have anything to do with race or Ethnicity,Egyptians and Arabs born in Egypt(Africa) are not Black(theyre Semitic or Hamitic)...White people born in Asia or Africa etc are not Asian ethnically nor black..Not many White Americans call themselves European American..none that I am aware of anyway..The same thing goes for being born in a Nation..Whites born in Japan are not Japanese.Arabs born in Germany are not German etc..

It would be simpler imo to just say Caucasian-American,Caucasian African,******* or Black-American,******* or Black African etc etc..

Nope. More like American-African!
An African American is someone that is black that is an American. The term african-american was derived in a bid for political correctness to refer to a blackman such as myself. It has more to do with the color of the skin.

As for your friend who is white & is african, i would say Kudos! to his orgins. His son can be whatever he chooses. One word i'd use for his roots is 'unique'!

Is it even an issue?

NO. But your friend himself IS now an African-American if he was a citizen of his birth nation. (I don't think so if he was born of tourist parents on vacation, holding citizenship elsewhere).

No, coz whites didn't originate in Africa---remember, they all came from Europe somewhere! You're only African-American if you're black!

No...African-American is a racial category.

Actually the whole "ancestry" thing is something we should oppose.

Your allegience should be to the place you live and grew up in, not to the land of your parents.

Don't be silly. It refers to your ancestry.

However, if your friend wants to be mocked, he could refer to himself as a ___ (fill in Kenyan, South African, etc)-American since he was born there.
