My favourites are Eastern,French and German so I'll give you some of them! People have been saying 'Amelie'-definately,its a wonderfully quirky film with a brilliant soundtrack! Another one with Audrey Tautou is 'Un Long Dimanche de Fiancailles'( A Very Long Engagement), again French-very touching film! 'Stand-By' is another French film, set in an airport-again very good. 'Hero' and 'House of Flying Daggers' are superb films if you like that genre, both have beautiful cinematogrophy and soundtracks. Same with 'Dolls' which is Japanese-quite a slow moving film but beautiful and very sad! And lastly I'll reccomend 'The Edukators' and 'Goodbye Lenin!' which are German and highly enjoyable! Happy viewing! :)

If you live in the U.S. all foreign films are good since Hollywood movies suck, they are commercial and plain pathetic.
Latinamerican films are realistic, crude, and dark humor like. I'm Mexican and am a huge fan of Spanish, Mexican, Colombian, Argentinan, Cuban, and Brazilian films.
Try to get:
Amores Perros-Mexico
Sexo, pudor y lagrimas-Mexico
Atame-Spain
Todo sobre mi Madre-Spain
Plata quemada-Argentina
European films are interesting, profund, poetic and upbeat. I like French, German, Italian films the most. Take your pick all are fascinating....
I'm also open to some Asian films ones not all of them.....

I am just about to rent "The Downfall." It is a German movie about the last 12 days of Hitler's life, when he went totally mad and doing all sorts of crazy stuff. It is supposed to be one of the best wartime movies ever made. Lots of emotions and meanings. Highly recommended.
Go watch the movie trailer at its official website

City of God... trust me everyone I showed it to LOVED it!! its supposed to be a true story but its hard to believe something like this actually exists...
its Brazilian... about a community with such harsh conditions that gangs are made up of children younger than 10!! we pretty much follow one kid who grows up in this community and tries to be something else, a photographer..
its got a lot of violence, but its a great film! it did amazingly well here in the US.
